Medicaid spend down blind adults face on the resource worksheet
Blind status does not create a separate, higher federal resource ceiling for SSI or for most SSI-linked Medicaid programs. The individual countable cap remains $2,000 in Washington, South Carolina, and most states that mirror SSI rules for long-term care.
Countable items include checking, savings, CDs, stocks, non-exempt land, and extra vehicles. Washington HCA counted Curtis's $14,800 BECU savings and $2,140 checking total on March 1, 2026. His spend-down gap was $14,940 before exempt spending.
Mae, 61, in Columbia received SSI based on blindness and a separate physical condition. Richland County DSS listed $19,260 across a South State CD and a joint checking account with her sister on the February 1 snapshot. Mae's gap was $17,260 even though her blindness certificate sat in the file since 2019.
